Brief History and Information about
TARPON SPRINGS

In the heart of Tarpon Springs lies its Historic Downtown, with its varied collection of antique stores, unique specialty shops, artisans and art galleries, restaurants, cafes and specialty services of all kinds.

This business district dates back to the arrival of the wealthy Northerners in the 1880's. It continued to grow with the influx of the Greek sponge industry beginning in 1905 until the sponge industry declined in the 1940's and many of the historic buildings fell into disrepair. It is hard to envision those hard times now as one walks along the tree-shaded brick sidewalks lined with unique green benches and nostalgic street lamps. In 1991 the Main Street District was chosen to be included on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Old Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Station is now home to the Historical Society's Museum. At the south end of the building is a HO- gauge model railroad exhibit. The old railroad tracks were replaced by the Pinellas Trail, a 46-mile paved recreation path from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. The "Downtown" is also home to an extensive new Public Library, an informative new Chamber of Commerce building and boasts the best Cultural and Performing Arts Center in the area! The "Downtown" is also a magnet for
creative people. The pressed-in ceilings and brick walls are a perfect backdrop for the amazing variety of items from the days gone by in stores providing space for nearly 150 antique dealers. A diverse and unique collection of high quality specialty shops adds further interest. Artisans, art galleries and craftpersons abound in the store fronts as well as on side streets and second-story studios. Remodeled homes and other buildings house an abundant array of restaurants and cafes offering a great breakfast, relaxing lunch or romantic dining experience. A spacious Bed & Breakfast and quaint motels help make your stay in "Downtown" complete.

On the edge of the business district are beautiful Victorian homes built by the founders of Tarpon Springs. The restoration of these homes has coincided with the rebirth of Downtown. These majestic homes offer the perfect setting for leisurely strolls around Craig Park and Spring Bayou.
The Gondolier Motel of Tarpon Springs is only minutes from downtown. The "Downtown" District is located in the vicinity of Tarpon Avenue and Alt. 19 (Pinellas Ave.)
